Axel's take: 8.3/10

A strong sightseeing base, with better service and location than room polish. a historic 4-star sightseeing base beside Trafalgar Square, scored for what it is.

The Grand is a historic 4-star beside Trafalgar Square, and we'd choose it for exploring London rather than a luxury escape. The National Gallery, West End and Thames are within easy walking reach, with Charing Cross and Embankment nearby. Booking.com, Expedia and Tripadvisor guests consistently praise the helpful staff, cleanliness and comfortable beds. Complimentary coffee, filtered water and guest laundry add practical value.

The grand exterior sets expectations that the bedrooms don't always match. Recent Expedia and Tripadvisor reviews describe some small, dated rooms and bathrooms, plus occasional noisy or ineffective air conditioning. Breakfast can cost extra, so check your booking's inclusions. It's a strong pick for travelers spending their days sightseeing; we'd skip it if spacious, freshly finished rooms are the priority.

• Best for: first-time London visitors; West End theater trips; sightseeing without a car

• Watch out for: Some small, dated rooms and bathrooms; Occasional air-conditioning complaints; Breakfast not always included

• Location: Excellent for central sights, with Charing Cross and Embankment stations a short walk away.

• Rooms: Comfortable beds, but room size and condition vary; some bathrooms feel cramped.

• Cleanliness: Strong overall cleanliness feedback across the major guest-review sites.

• Service: Helpful, welcoming staff are one of the most consistent strengths.

• Amenities: Gym, free Wi-Fi, complimentary coffee and filtered water; guests also appreciate free laundry.

• Fees and surprises: Breakfast may be extra; Booking.com lists a refundable credit-card damage deposit.
