Axel's take: 8.7/10

A strong Mayfair choice for warm service, with room selection worth some care. An intimate five-star Mayfair hotel with serviced townhouse residences, scored for what it is.

The Athenaeum is an intimate five-star hotel opposite Green Park, strongest on personal service and a location that makes sightseeing easy. Recent Tripadvisor and Expedia guests repeatedly praise the welcoming staff, comfortable beds and cleanliness. We'd choose it for a less formal luxury stay; the townhouse residences, with kitchens and separate sitting rooms, also make practical sense for families and longer visits.

The trade-offs are room-to-room variation and occasional noise complaints: don't assume every bedroom is spacious or equally up to date. The hotel announced a bedroom refresh through the end of 2026, so ask about remaining work and your room's condition. The small spa requires advance booking, and an optional 5% bedroom service charge is added at checkout. We'd skip it if expansive wellness facilities or consistently grand rooms are priorities.

• Best for: Sightseers wanting a Mayfair base; Families booking townhouse residences; Travelers who value personable service

• Watch out for: Bedroom refresh scheduled through late 2026; Room sizes vary; occasional noise reports; Optional bedroom service charge added automatically

• Location: Opposite Green Park, with Buckingham Palace, shopping and Underground connections within easy reach.

• Rooms: Comfortable overall, but size and condition vary; confirm whether your allocated category has been refreshed.

• Cleanliness: A consistent strength across Tripadvisor, Booking.com and Expedia feedback.

• Service: Warm, helpful staff are the clearest recurring highlight, although restaurant service draws occasional criticism.

• Amenities: Restaurant, bar, 24-hour gym and a small spa with hot tub, sauna and steam room; spa reservations required.

• Fees and surprises: Optional 5% bedroom and 13.5% restaurant service charges are removable on request; confirm remaining refurbishment work.
