Axel's take: 8.3/10

A dependable Bloomsbury base with welcoming staff, a lovely garden and some dated rooms. a traditional, no-frills 3-star in central Bloomsbury, scored for what it is.

Bedford is a traditional 3-star in Imperial London Hotels’ collection. We'd pick it for straightforward comfort and a central Bloomsbury location near the British Museum, Russell Square and Holborn stations. Recent Tripadvisor and Expedia guests repeatedly praise the helpful staff, cleanliness and breakfast. The garden and Botanica restaurant give it more character than a purely functional sightseeing base.

The compromise is the accommodation: some rooms and bathrooms feel dated, smaller categories can be tight, and there's no room air-conditioning—a recurring summer complaint. Noise varies by room; garden-facing rooms are the better bet for avoiding traffic, though corridor noise can still carry. It's a strong choice for practical sightseers and solo travelers, but we'd skip it if modern bathrooms, generous space or reliable summer cooling are priorities.

• Best for: sightseers exploring central London; solo travelers wanting single rooms; travelers prioritizing service over modern decor

• Watch out for: no room air-conditioning; some compact, dated rooms and bathrooms; traffic and corridor noise in some rooms

• Location: Walkable Bloomsbury base near the British Museum, with Russell Square and Holborn stations nearby.

• Rooms: Comfortable basics; condition and space vary, with garden-facing categories worth considering.

• Cleanliness: A consistent strength across recent reviews, despite some aging finishes.

• Service: Welcoming, helpful reception and restaurant staff receive repeated praise.

• Amenities: Garden, Botanica restaurant and bar, free Wi-Fi, breakfast buffet and on-site parking.

• Fees and surprises: Parking and pets cost extra; breakfast inclusion depends on the rate booked.
