#2 of 3 hotels in Smathers Beach by Axel's take. Smathers Beach is #4 of 6 places to stay in Key West. The best hotels in Smathers Beach, ranked · Where to stay in Key West
Axel's take: 8.4/10
A strong pool-and-beach base, provided you’re happy taking the shuttle into town. a relaxed upscale resort across the road from Smathers Beach, scored for what it is.
Margaritaville Beach House is a relaxed upscale resort across the road from Smathers Beach, rather than a luxury beachfront retreat. It’s a strong pick for families and couples who want spacious suites, pool time and some distance from downtown nightlife. Recent Tripadvisor and Expedia guests repeatedly praise the friendly staff, clean rooms and convenient downtown and airport shuttles. The lagoon-style pool and poolside service are particular strengths.
The compromise is location: exploring Old Town means planning around transport rather than stepping outside into it. Beach access requires crossing the road, and several summer guests report seaweed and unpleasant smells. Some reviews flag maintenance lapses, although the overall cleanliness picture remains positive. There’s also a mandatory resort fee and a credit-card convenience fee. We’d skip it for a walk-everywhere nightlife trip or if dependable beach swimming is the priority.
-
Best for: families wanting spacious suites; couples prioritizing pool time; travelers comfortable using a shuttle
-
Watch out for: Old Town requires transport; seasonal seaweed at Smathers Beach; mandatory resort and credit-card fees
-
Location: Across South Roosevelt Boulevard from Smathers Beach; the downtown shuttle helps offset the distance from Old Town.
-
Rooms: Spacious suites and comfortable beds earn praise; some guests report maintenance issues.
-
Cleanliness: Generally a strength across recent reviews, with occasional room or pool-cleaning complaints.
-
Service: Friendly staff, helpful shuttle drivers and attentive poolside service are recurring positives.
-
Amenities: Lagoon-style pool, Tin Cup Chalice restaurant, family activities and beach towels; shuttles and parking are included in the resort fee.
-
Fees and surprises: Mandatory nightly resort fee, a 1% credit-card convenience fee and a check-in authorization hold; beach chairs and umbrellas can cost extra.
