#3 of 3 hotels in Smathers Beach by Axel's take. Smathers Beach is #4 of 6 places to stay in Key West. The best hotels in Smathers Beach, ranked · Where to stay in Key West

Axel's take: 8.3/10

A strong pool-and-breakfast pick, provided you can live with airport noise. a simple, motel-style chain hotel by the airport, scored for what it is.

This simple, motel-style Hampton by the airport is a strong pick for travelers who want comfortable basics and pool time rather than an Old Town address. Recent Expedia and Hotels.com guests repeatedly praise clean, spacious rooms, friendly staff and the pool; Tripadvisor guests also like the poolside Cheekie Hut. Included hot breakfast and free airport and downtown shuttles make it a practical Key West base.

The compromise is location: Duval Street is roughly four miles away, and ocean views do not mean a sandy beach outside your room. Aircraft noise is a recurring complaint, with some guests also reporting loud air-conditioning. Downtown shuttle returns can fill up, and Hilton now lists paid parking despite older reviews describing it as free. We'd skip it for light sleepers or anyone wanting to walk home from Old Town nightlife.

Best for: families wanting pool time; travelers happy using a downtown shuttle; short stays near the airport
Watch out for: aircraft noise and some loud air-conditioning; Old Town requires transportation; paid parking and busy shuttle returns
Location: Near the airport, across the road from the ocean; roughly four miles from Duval Street.
Rooms: Generally spacious and comfortable, with microwaves and fridges; some guests report noisy air-conditioning.
Cleanliness: A consistent strength across Booking.com ratings and recent Expedia and Hotels.com reviews.
Service: Usually friendly and helpful, with shuttle drivers receiving particular praise.
Amenities: Outdoor pool, Cheekie Hut bar and grill, fitness center, included hot breakfast and complimentary shuttles.
Fees and surprises: Hilton confirms paid self-parking; pets cost extra, and downtown shuttle returns can fill up.
