#4 of 9 hotels in Thamel by Axel's take. Thamel is #1 of 8 places to stay in Kathmandu. The best hotels in Thamel, ranked · Where to stay in Kathmandu

Axel's take: 8.2/10

Choose it for the gardens and thoughtful staff, not cutting-edge luxury. a traditional five-star hotel with gardens on Thamel’s edge, scored for what it is.

The Malla is a traditional five-star hotel on Thamel’s edge, strongest on hospitality and outdoor space rather than polished luxury. Its gardens and outdoor pool give you somewhere to decompress while keeping shops and restaurants within walking distance. Recent Tripadvisor and Expedia guests repeatedly praise helpful staff and clean, comfortable rooms. We’d choose it for a relaxed Kathmandu base or a comfortable post-trek break.

The reservation is room condition: despite the hotel advertising renovations, guests across both sites still describe dated interiors and bathrooms. That matters at five-star level. Breakfast gets mixed feedback, and a detailed late-2025 wedding-noise complaint was acknowledged by management, so ask about events before booking. Skip it if contemporary bathrooms, consistently modern fittings or guaranteed quiet are priorities.

  • Best for: post-trek downtime; sightseers wanting Thamel access; travelers who prioritize gardens and service

  • Watch out for: dated rooms and bathrooms; potential wedding-event noise; confirm step-free access

  • Location: On Thamel’s outer edge, convenient for walking to shops and restaurants.

  • Rooms: Generally comfortable, but recent guests still report interiors and bathrooms needing updates.

  • Cleanliness: A consistent strength across Tripadvisor, Booking.com and Expedia feedback.

  • Service: Warm, helpful staff are the clearest recurring positive across sources.

  • Amenities: Outdoor pool, gardens, restaurants, gym, casino and Shanti Spa with sauna and steam room.

  • Fees and surprises: Breakfast and airport transfers can cost extra; parking policies conflict across sources, so confirm directly.
