8.4/10
The easiest first base, provided you choose your sleeping street carefully.
Thamel wins on doorstep choice and value, with strong traveler atmosphere; hotel quality and access are less exceptional, and late-night noise needs checking.

Thamel makes Kathmandu straightforward: trekking outfitters, travel agencies, bookshops and restaurants cluster around Thamel Marg and Chaksibari Marg. It is the practical choice before or after a trek, and the easiest place to find traveling companions. The city's small queer nightlife scene is concentrated here too.
The compromise is sleep. This is Kathmandu's main nightlife district, not a quiet heritage retreat. Ask specifically about nearby music venues and street-facing rooms rather than assuming every side lane is peaceful. Visitors report that quieter addresses exist close to the action. Skip it if restful evenings matter more than convenience.
