Axel's take on Old Town & Niederdorf: #1 of 9 in Zurich, 8.6/10
Stay here for old Zurich, but choose your sleeping street carefully. Historic character, exceptional walkability and abundant restaurants put it first, despite modest hotel value and late noise on the main bar streets.
Niederdorfstrasse, the lanes around Hirschenplatz and the riverfront Limmatquai put Zurich’s historic character outside your door. You can wander between churches, cafés and small shops without planning your day around transport. The Kunsthaus is an easy uphill excursion, and Niederdorf also has several established LGBTQ+ meeting places. This is our first choice for a short introduction to the city.
The catch is that picturesque does not mean peaceful: the main restaurant and bar streets stay lively after dinner. Ask for a room away from the action if you sleep lightly. Grossmünster restoration continues through 2029, so expect ongoing work around that landmark.
- Best for: first-time visitors, museums and culture, LGBTQ+ travelers, shopping
- Skip it if: You need reliably quiet nights; You dislike cobbled pedestrian lanes with luggage
- Getting around: Walk the historic core; tram 15 follows Limmatquai, while Central has tram 10 to ZRH; airport trains also run directly from nearby HB.
- After dark: Restaurant terraces and bars keep Niederdorf lively; a room on a back lane is a better bet for light sleepers.
- Rates: Typical Axel rate $298 a night

How to choose
- Choose Hotel Adler Zürich if you value approachable service, Old Town character and individually controlled air conditioning.
- Choose Hotel Alexander if you want breakfast included and soundproof windows at a mid-priced Old Town base.
- Choose Hotel Limmathof if you want one of the cheapest central bases and can manage without air conditioning.
What paying more buys
Hotel Adler costs more than Hotel Limmathof but adds individually controlled air conditioning, artwork and a guest lounge. Marktgasse Hotel charges more again for distinctive design, not guaranteed extra space. If you mainly need a clean bed near the trains, Limmathof's simpler rooms may be enough. Typical rates with Axel here run from $198 a night at Hotel Limmathof to $412 at Marktgasse Hotel (last 30 days).
