Axel's take on Yorkville & the Annex: #5 of 6 in Toronto, 7.4/10
Choose Yorkville for polish, the Annex for a more everyday Toronto. Joint-highest hotel quality and appealing neighbourhood character cannot offset the weakest value and longer journeys to downtown attractions.
Yorkville and the Annex offer two versions of a Bloor Street stay: designer shops and polished dining around Bay and Avenue Road, then bookshops, casual restaurants and residential streets farther west. The Royal Ontario Museum, Bata Shoe Museum, Koerner Hall and University of Toronto make this our best museum-and-neighbourhood pairing.
You trade doorstep access to the waterfront and stadiums for an excellent subway position. Pick Yorkville for a dressed-up couples' trip, the Annex for a more everyday feel. Side streets can be restful, but Bloor itself is busy and the Annex's student-oriented evening scene is not uniformly quiet.
- Best for: luxury travelers, couples, museums and culture, shopping
- Skip it if: You want to walk home from waterfront attractions; Your main plans are games or conventions downtown
- Getting around: Lines 1 and 2 meet at St. George and Bloor-Yonge, with Bay and Museum also useful; museums are walkable; YYZ via UP to Bloor, a walk to Dundas West and Line 2, or UP to Union and Line 1; YTZ via Union shuttle and Line 1.
- After dark: Yorkville leans toward dinner and drinks; Annex pubs keep parts of Bloor active, while residential side streets offer a calmer return.
- Rates: Typical Axel rate $570 a night · usually 5% under the public rate
