Axel's take on Shilin & Yuanshan: #8 of 9 in Taipei, 6.4/10
A useful northern base when parks, performances and family outings lead. Good hotels and northern attractions suit focused itineraries, but weaker access and fewer nearby options make it less balanced for general sightseeing.
Near Jiantan, Shilin Night Market and the Taipei Performing Arts Center give you a strong evening pairing. Toward Yuanshan, the emphasis shifts to Expo Park, cultural outings and greener surroundings. Jiantanshan adds accessible hiking, while the wider Shilin area puts northern family attractions on the itinerary without crossing the whole city first.
Choose this part of Taipei when those northern outings genuinely lead your plans. It is not one continuous entertainment strip, and the National Palace Museum still needs a bus or taxi rather than a casual walk. Addresses near Jiantan or Shilin stations are easier than hillside ones. For a first visit split evenly across Taipei, Zhongshan makes a more balanced base.
- Best for: families, museums and culture
- Skip it if: Most of your plans are in eastern or southern Taipei; You want every attraction within walking distance
- Getting around: Red Line at Jiantan/Shilin, with Yuanshan serving Expo Park; walk locally rather than between every attraction. Buses serve the Palace Museum. TPE: Airport MRT then Red; TSA: Brown then Red via Da’an, or taxi.
- After dark: Night-market streets draw dinner crowds; Yuanshan’s MAJI Square is a separate evening pocket, not an extension of the market.
- Rates: Typical Axel rate $164 a night
