Axel's take on People's Square & Nanjing Road: #1 of 8 in Shanghai, 8.1/10
The simplest sightseeing base, with excellent trains and little residential charm. The strongest overall mix of sightseeing access, nearby attractions and good hotels wins, despite middling value and a commercial rather than residential feel.
People's Square and East Nanjing Road make Shanghai easy to organize: major metro connections, the pedestrian shopping street and a straightforward walk toward the Bund. The park, theaters and large stores give you plenty to build a day around. Choose it when convenience matters more than leafy streets or a neighborhood you would visit just for dinner.
The trade-off is a busy, commercial atmosphere. Museum visitors should also note a consequential change: from July 9, 2026, through November 14, 2027, the Shanghai Museum here hosts only its ancient Americas exhibition; the permanent collections are at Shanghai Museum East in Pudong.
- Best for: first-time visitors, travelers without a car
- Skip it if: You want leafy residential streets; You dislike major shopping-street crowds
- Getting around: People's Square has Lines 1/2/8, with Lines 2/10 at East Nanjing Road farther east; walk the pedestrian street toward the Bund; Line 2 connects directly to PVG and SHA Terminal 2.
- After dark: East Nanjing Road is about illuminated storefronts and evening shoppers, not intimate neighborhood nightlife.
- Rates: Typical Axel rate $242 a night
