Axel's take on Upper Hill: #4 of 8 in Nairobi, 6.1/10
Stay for nearby meetings; expect to travel for your evening. Excellent hotels and useful access support meeting-led stays, but limited doorstep dining and weaker value hold Upper Hill back.
Upper Hill works best when the address on your meeting invitation is here. Elgon Road, Hospital Road and Ralph Bunche Road are about offices, hospitals and conference rooms, not browsing shops. Daytime activity supports short local walks, while Uhuru Park lies downhill towards town. Avoiding a daily cross-city commute is the real reason to choose it.
After work, street life thins and dinner often means choosing a destination before calling a car. We also rate it a useful base for Nyayo Stadium events, given its position northwest of the ground. Skip it for nightlife or a first visit built around trying different restaurants on foot each evening.
- Best for: business trips and conventions, sports fans
- Skip it if: You want restaurants and shops outside the door; You want an active evening neighborhood
- Getting around: The 7C serves the Kenyatta National Hospital side, with other matatus on surrounding main roads; local walks depend on the address. NBO transfers can use the Expressway; WIL is reached by taxi.
- After dark: Offices empty and streets become quiet; evening activity is concentrated in individual restaurants and accommodation rather than along a continuous shopping street.
- Rates: Typical Axel rate $136 a night · usually 12% under the public rate

Where to look in Upper Hill
- Bishop Road, Second Ngong Avenue. A practical pocket for institutional appointments and quieter evenings; choose it to reduce commuting, not for nightlife. Hotels here: Fairview Hotel, Town Lodge Upperhill.
- Elgon Road. Stay close to corporate towers and conference appointments; daytime business activity gives way to quieter streets after work. Hotels here: Radisson Blu Hotel Nairobi Upper Hill, Pullman Nairobi Upper Hill Hotel, Upperhill Blueberry Hotel.
- Ralph Bunche Road. Prioritize this medical-and-office corridor for hospital visits or nearby work, rather than evening browsing. Hotels here: Swiss Lenana Mount Hotel, Hadassah Hotel.
How to choose
- Choose Fairview Hotel if garden calm, heritage character and attentive service matter more than walk-out nightlife; confirm step-free access.
- Choose Town Lodge Upperhill if you want strong housekeeping and Fairview pool access for less, accepting compact rooms and fans rather than air-conditioning.
- Choose Hadassah Hotel if hospital proximity and keeping costs down outweigh polished rooms; you do not need an elevator.
What paying more buys
Hadassah keeps spending down for hospital visits, while Town Lodge adds reliable housekeeping and access to Fairview's pool. Paying more for Fairview buys renovated heritage rooms and landscaped grounds; Radisson Blu adds extensive conference and wellness facilities. Those upgrades are less worthwhile if you only need a clean bed near an appointment. Typical rates with Axel here run from $38 a night at Upperhill Blueberry Hotel to $198 at Radisson Blu Hotel Nairobi Upper Hill (last 30 days).
