Axel's take on Paseo de Montejo: #4 of 7 in Merida, 6.6/10
Grand architecture and congress convenience, with longer walks to the old city. Grand architecture, good hotels and useful connections outweigh sparse doorstep choices, but weak value and longer walks keep it fourth.
Paseo de Montejo gives you Mérida’s grand boulevard: mansion façades, Palacio Cantón and a more spacious strolling experience than the tightest Centro streets. The congress district around Avenida Colón is particularly useful for business trips, while the historic boulevard suits couples who want architecture and an evening promenade.
Do not mistake an address on Montejo for being beside Plaza Grande. The farther north you stay, the more sightseeing involves a long, hot walk or a taxi. Boulevard-facing rooms are also a poor bet for guaranteed silence. We prefer the historic stretch between Calle 47 and Monumento a la Patria to the extended avenue for a first leisure visit.
- Best for: couples, luxury travelers, business trips and conventions, shopping
- Skip it if: You want Plaza Grande immediately outside; You assume a broad boulevard guarantees quiet
- Getting around: Walk the boulevard; R907 links MID with Santa Ana, Paseo 60 and the congress district; use taxis for farther sights.
- After dark: Restaurants and bars punctuate the evening promenade, rather than forming an uninterrupted nightlife strip along the whole boulevard.
- Rates: Typical Axel rate $118 a night · usually 6% under the public rate

Where to look in Paseo de Montejo
- Montejo, Calles 35–43. The mansion-and-museum stretch suits architecture lovers who want boulevard walks rather than conference-first surroundings. Hotels here: Hotel Palacio Maya, Hotel El Español Paseo de Montejo.
- Avenida Colón, Montejo–Calle 62. Choose this junction for the upper historic boulevard and congress district, accepting longer trips to Plaza Grande. Hotels here: Fiesta Americana - Merida, ibis Merida, Holiday Inn Merida by IHG, Hyatt Regency Merida Hotel, Hotel Sureño Yucatán.
- Calle 60, Paseo 60. A concentrated dining stop suits restaurant-led evenings without expecting the entire boulevard to feel equally lively. Hotels here: NH Collection Merida Paseo Montejo, City Express Plus by Marriott Mérida, Hotel Palacio Maya.
How to choose
- Choose Fiesta Americana - Merida if you want generous room space, attentive service and full-service amenities including a spa.
- Choose ibis Merida if you want a cheaper convention-area base and can manage compact rooms with limited storage.
- Choose City Express Plus by Marriott Mérida if Paseo 60 ADO buses, a rooftop pool and included continental breakfast fit your plans.
What paying more buys
Fiesta Americana costs considerably more than ibis Merida, adding generous room space, a pool, spa and fuller dining options. Cheaper Holiday Inn Merida already offers spacious rooms, attentive staff and pools, but older bathrooms. The Fiesta Americana premium is harder to justify if practical family facilities matter more than upscale service and spa time. Typical rates with Axel here run from $76 a night at Hotel El Español Paseo de Montejo to $222 at Hotel Sureño Yucatán (last 30 days).
