Axel's take on Santa Lucía & Santa Ana: #1 of 7 in Merida, 7.7/10
The best all-round choice for walkable days and sociable evenings. It leads for character, walkability and hotel quality, with restaurants and sociable evenings close by, but value is weaker than in several central alternatives.
This is our default recommendation: Santa Lucía’s restaurant terraces and music around Calle 60 and 55, then Santa Ana’s market and galleries farther north. Calle 47 adds another restaurant-focused evening walk, and Paseo de Montejo is easy to fold into the day. You can alternate between sightseeing, regional cooking and drinks without organizing every outing around transport.
It is not uniformly quiet. A room beside a plaza or busy bar can feel very different from one on a residential side street. Choose it for a sociable, mostly car-free stay; skip the busiest frontages if early nights matter more than having dinner and entertainment downstairs.
- Best for: first-time visitors, food lovers, nightlife, LGBTQ+ travelers
- Skip it if: You want silence beside the main plazas; You prefer a less visitor-oriented neighborhood
- Getting around: Walk Calle 60, Calle 47 and lower Montejo; MID’s R907 electric bus stops at Santa Ana, otherwise use an airport taxi.
- After dark: Restaurant terraces, serenades and bars keep the main streets social; LGBTQ+ nightlife also has established addresses around Santa Lucía.
- Rates: Typical Axel rate $90 a night

How to choose
- Choose Hotel Zamna if personal service and an included full breakfast matter more than strong Wi-Fi or softer mattresses.
- Choose Hotel Hacienda VIP if you want spacious, individually styled rooms and historic mansion character.
- Choose Hotel Santa María Mérida if you want the cheapest stay here with a pool and can accept basic rooms and patchy Wi-Fi.
What paying more buys
Hotel Hacienda VIP costs much more than Hotel Santa María Mérida, buying spacious, individually styled rooms, mansion character and access to shared pools. Hotel Zamna offers a smaller step up for personal service and an included full breakfast. Neither upgrade is essential if you mainly need a walkable base and somewhere to cool off. Typical rates with Axel here run from $50 a night at Hotel Santa María Mérida to $242 at Hotel Hacienda VIP (last 30 days).
