Axel's take: 7.3/10

Good central character and a pool, but rooms need refreshing. An older mid-range hotel with colonial-style courtyards in central Mérida, scored for what it is.

Gran Real Yucatan is an older mid-range hotel whose colonial-style courtyards, outdoor pool and walkable central location are stronger draws than its rooms. We'd consider it for sightseeing rather than a polished hotel experience. Booking.com and Expedia guests regularly praise the helpful staff, comfortable rooms and cleanliness, and free parking is useful for travelers exploring beyond Mérida.

The recurring drawback is wear: recent guests describe tired towels, bedding and bathrooms, with maintenance complaints appearing across sites. Tripadvisor feedback is more mixed than the booking-site ratings. An August 2026 Expedia guest reported a nonworking elevator; confirm its status before booking if stairs are a problem. Wi-Fi also gets weaker feedback. We'd skip it for a reliably modern room or a work-focused stay, but it's a reasonable base if location and character matter more.

• Best for: Sightseers exploring central Mérida; Travelers wanting a courtyard pool; Road-trippers needing parking

• Watch out for: Worn rooms and linens; Confirm elevator operation; Inconsistent Wi-Fi

• Location: Walkable to the cathedral, Plaza Grande and central restaurants.

• Rooms: Often described as comfortable and spacious, but furnishings and bathrooms show their age.

• Cleanliness: Generally positive booking-site feedback, tempered by some recent bathroom-cleanliness complaints.

• Service: Helpful, friendly staff earn frequent praise, though assistance can be uneven.

• Amenities: Outdoor pool, children's pool and restaurant; Wi-Fi receives weaker ratings.

• Fees and surprises: Parking is listed as free; breakfast costs extra, and elevator operation needs confirmation.
