Axel's take on Milla de Oro: #5 of 6 in Medellin, 5.5/10
Choose it for business and shopping, not café-lined neighborhood wandering. Strong hotels and a useful business-and-shopping setting cannot fully offset weaker transport connections, fewer nearby options and poor value.
The Milla de Oro is El Poblado in business mode: offices, Avenida El Poblado, and the Oviedo and Santafé shopping malls. Stay here when meetings, shopping and a quieter alternative to the main nightlife streets matter more than neighborhood wandering. It works particularly well for travelers who are happy to use taxis.
The compromise is the street experience. Major roads and crossings interrupt walks, and neither the museums nor the main nightlife circuit is immediately outside. Aguacatala station requires a separate walk or feeder-bus ride, rather than sitting underneath the malls. Favor a side-street address if traffic noise bothers you; skip it if you want spontaneous evenings built around small cafés and bars.
- Best for: luxury travelers, business trips and conventions, shopping, a quiet stay
- Skip it if: You want small-street café life; You expect immediate metro access
- Getting around: The malls are walkable locally; feeder 132i links Oviedo with Aguacatala on Line A. MDE: taxi, or San Diego airport bus plus taxi; EOH: taxi.
- After dark: Less party-focused than Lleras and Provenza, but Avenida El Poblado still carries traffic; quieter does not mean silent.
- Rates: Typical Axel rate $125 a night · usually 11% under the public rate
Where to stay in Medellin: every neighborhood ranked
Where to look in Milla de Oro
- Avenida El Poblado by Oviedo. A straightforward shopping-and-business address, with restaurants and malls replacing the smaller café streets farther north. Hotels here: Hotel Poblado Plaza, Four Points by Sheraton Medellin, Hotel Estelar Milla de Oro.
- Calle 6 Sur near Santafé. Favor this mall-side pocket for shopping-led stays; Aguacatala remains a separate walk or integrated-bus connection. Hotels here: Estelar Square, Hampton by Hilton Medellin, NH Collection Medellín Royal.
- Avenida El Poblado, San Fernando. Offices and restaurant complexes suit meeting-heavy trips; this is a business corridor rather than a neighborhood-square setting. Hotels here: Hotel Estelar Blue, Hotel San Fernando Plaza, Medellin Marriott Hotel.
How to choose
- Choose Hotel Poblado Plaza if courteous service, spacious rooms and a strong breakfast matter more than extensive leisure facilities.
- Choose Four Points by Sheraton Medellin if direct Oviedo access, included breakfast and a pool suit your plans; confirm renovation status.
- Choose Hotel Estelar Blue if you prefer quieter nights and spacious rooms to having a pool.
What paying more buys
Hotel Estelar Blue offers spacious rooms and quieter nights for less than pricier Hotel Poblado Plaza, whose strengths are service and breakfast. Medellin Marriott adds full-service facilities, including a pool and spa, but front-desk follow-through is uneven. The premium is hard to justify for shopping or business alone: mid-priced Four Points already includes breakfast and a pool. Typical rates with Axel here run from $116 a night at Hotel Estelar Blue to $192 at Medellin Marriott Hotel (last 30 days).
