Axel's take on Jemaa el-Fna & Riad Zitoun: #1 of 8 in Marrakech, 8.3/10
Stay here for Marrakech on your doorstep, not guaranteed peace. It takes first place for immediate sightseeing, plentiful nearby food and strong hotels, despite weaker value, crowds and awkward luggage access.
Stay here if you want Marrakech to begin the moment you step outside. Jemaa el-Fna supplies evening food stalls and street performances; Rue Riad Zitoun el Kedim and Rue Riad Zitoun el Jdid lead south through shops toward the palaces. The square makes this an unusually easy medina address to orient around.
Choose a side lane rather than a room overlooking the square if sleep matters. Persistent approaches from sellers and unofficial guides can wear thin, while luggage still needs carrying beyond the nearest vehicle access. Skip it if crowds drain you, or you want effortless stroller access and a conventional bar scene.
- Best for: first-time visitors, travelers without a car, travelers on a budget
- Skip it if: You need reliably quiet evenings; You need vehicle access to the door
- Getting around: Walk to the souks, Koutoubia and southern palaces; from RAK, bus 19 stops by Arset el-Bilk, or take a taxi to the nearest accessible street and walk.
- After dark: The square becomes busier after sunset; quieter accommodation lanes make a familiar, well-planned route home useful.
- Rates: Typical Axel rate $182 a night · usually 13% under the public rate

Where to look in Jemaa el-Fna & Riad Zitoun
- Jemaa el-Fna's eastern lanes. Stay close for food stalls and evening performances; better for energetic sightseeing than reliably quiet nights. Hotels here: Riad Andalla Spa, Riad Hotel El Kennaria.
- Rue Riad Zitoun el Jdid. A useful southern sightseeing route toward the palaces; suits walkers who want shops between their riad and the sights. Hotels here: MonRiad, Marrakech Riads, Angsana Heritage Collection.
- Rue de la Koutoubia. Choose the western edge for straightforward orientation between the mosque, square and souks, without sleeping directly over the main spectacle. Hotels here: Palais Sebban, Les Jardins De La Koutoubia Hotel.
How to choose
- Choose Riad Andalla Spa if you want attentive arrival help and a hammam, and can manage stairs.
- Choose Riad Al Mamoune if you want cheaper-than-most traditional character and personal hosting rather than modern polish.
- Choose Les Jardins De La Koutoubia Hotel if you'll alternate sightseeing with outdoor swimming and want restaurants and bars within the hotel.
What paying more buys
Riad Al Mamoune offers personal hosting and traditional character for less than most here. Paying more at Marrakech Riads, Angsana Heritage Collection adds spa facilities, while Les Jardins De La Koutoubia offers courtyard and rooftop outdoor pools rather than a small plunge pool. Neither premium is necessary if you'll spend your days out and mainly want helpful hosts. Typical rates with Axel here run from $120 a night at Riad Hotel El Kennaria to $442 at Les Jardins De La Koutoubia Hotel (last 30 days).
