Axel's take on Durbar Square & Freak Street: #6 of 8 in Kathmandu, 6.1/10
Sleep beside old Kathmandu's temples, not its main traveler scene. Durbar Square & Freak Street offer excellent old-town access and temple atmosphere, but a small, lower-scoring hotel selection limits their standing.
Stay around Basantapur and Jhochhen Tole, better known as Freak Street, to put old Kathmandu first. Hanuman Dhoka, Kumari Ghar and the square's temple architecture are immediately at hand. This is a base for early walks, courtyard discoveries and watching everyday worship rather than organizing your entire Nepal trip in one street.
Freak Street's hippie-era reputation should not mislead you: today's traveler scene is much smaller than Thamel's, with a handful of longstanding cafes and simple places to stay. Choose it for atmosphere and budget-minded independence. Skip it if you want extensive nightlife, plentiful trip-planning help or an easy, polished introduction to the city.
- Best for: travelers on a budget, travelers without a car, sports fans
- Skip it if: You want Thamel's traveler services; You prefer spacious, easy-going walking routes
- Getting around: Walk Basantapur, Asan and New Road; Sajha buses stop at NAC to the east. From KTM, take a taxi or Sajha 5 to Ratnapark plus a final walk or ride.
- After dark: Think cafes and square-side evenings rather than club-hopping; Freak Street is quieter than its old counterculture reputation suggests.
- Rates: Typical Axel rate $46 a night · usually 11% under the public rate

Where to look in Durbar Square & Freak Street
- Basantapur Durbar Square. Start beside the square for temples, courtyards and everyday worship on foot; best for travelers putting old Kathmandu first. Hotels here: World Heritage Hotel & Aparments.
- Jhochhen Tole, Freak Street. Choose this stretch for café stops and local street life south of the square, not Thamel-style club-hopping.
How to choose
- Choose World Heritage Hotel & Aparments if you want Newari interiors beside Durbar Square and accept stairs, variable hot water and awkward taxi access.
- Choose Pashupati Plaza if your actual destination is Pashupatinath, not Durbar Square, and you accept repeated cleanliness complaints.
What paying more buys
World Heritage Hotel & Aparments costs more than Pashupati Plaza and buys Newari interiors, a courtyard and a genuine Durbar Square doorstep. Pashupati Plaza is in Pingalasthan near Pashupatinath, so it is not a cheaper substitute for this location. The premium is not worth it if your trip is temple-focused around Pashupatinath rather than old Kathmandu. Typical rates with Axel here run from $38 a night at Pashupati Plaza to $54 at World Heritage Hotel & Aparments (last 30 days).
The best hotels in Durbar Square & Freak Street, ranked by Axel's take
Each hotel scored for what it is by Axel's own review; the rate is one stay Axel priced this week, beside the public rate for the same dates.
- World Heritage Hotel & Aparments 8.3/10, rustic 3-star heritage hotel with rooms and studio apartments beside Durbar Square. Choose it for Newari character and warm service, not polished modern comforts. Why it's here: Newari wood-and-brick character beside Durbar Square, with warm service and studio kitchen options. Accept: stairs, inconsistent hot water, street noise and awkward taxi access.
- Pashupati Plaza 5.8/10, basic budget hotel near Pashupatinath Temple. Convenient for temple visits, but cleanliness and service make it a cautious choice. Why it's here: a location-first budget option for Pashupatinath visits, not Durbar Square sightseeing. Accept: repeated cleanliness complaints, inconsistent service and unreliable advertised amenities.
