Axel's take on Old Town: #2 of 7 in Edinburgh, 8.5/10
Stay here for Edinburgh’s history, not an early night. Old Town puts history, food and nightlife on your doorstep, but its hotels score below New Town’s and steep, noisy streets limit its appeal.
The Royal Mile links the castle with Holyroodhouse through closes, churches and centuries of tightly packed buildings. Victoria Street, Grassmarket and the National Museum of Scotland make wandering rewarding before you have planned anything. For a first visit built around Edinburgh’s history, this is the most immediate place to stay.
The compromise is physical as well as social: gradients, steps and cobbles make luggage and tired legs harder work. Recent visitors flag Grassmarket noise, while Canongate can feel considerably quieter late at night. Choose the actual street carefully; skip the busiest pub strips if uninterrupted sleep matters more than atmosphere.
- Best for: first-time visitors, museums and culture, nightlife, travelers without a car
- Skip it if: You need easy, step-free walking; You want reliably quiet nights
- Getting around: Walk to the main historical sights and Waverley; bus 31 crosses South Bridge. From EDI, take Airlink 100 to Waverley Bridge or a direct tram to Princes Street/St Andrew Square, then walk uphill.
- After dark: Grassmarket and Cowgate attract late pub and club crowds; visitors report quieter evenings farther down Canongate.
- Rates: Typical Axel rate $290 a night

What paying more buys
Cheaper-than-most ibis South Bridge covers the basics, but compact rooms and noise are compromises. Pricier Radisson Blu adds generally spacious rooms and pool facilities; mid-priced Novotel also has a pool, though family rooms can feel tight.
