Axel's take: 8.2/10

A strong sightseeing base with friendly staff, but unreliable room cooling a practical, family-friendly 4-star near Grassmarket, scored for what it is.

Novotel Edinburgh Centre is a practical 4-star near Grassmarket, and we'd shortlist it for a family city break rather than a luxury escape. Recent Expedia, Tripadvisor and Accor guests repeatedly praise helpful staff, clean rooms and walkable access to the castle and Old Town. The indoor pool, sauna and whirlpool add something useful beyond the usual city-hotel basics, while breakfast generally earns good feedback.

The main reservation is room temperature: several 2026 guests across different sites describe ineffective cooling or rooms that run hot, sometimes with fans supplied. Family rooms can also feel tight with the sofa bed open, and the small, paid car park is awkward to manoeuvre around. It's a strong pick for sightseeing with children; we'd skip it if dependable air-conditioning or generous space for four is essential.

• Best for: families wanting a pool; Old Town sightseeing; car-free city breaks

• Watch out for: recurring room-cooling complaints; tight rooms for four; limited, awkward paid parking

• Location: Handy for Grassmarket, the castle and Old Town sights on foot.

• Rooms: Generally comfortable; space feels tighter with family sofa beds open, and cooling draws repeated complaints.

• Cleanliness: Strong overall feedback across sites, despite occasional housekeeping lapses.

• Service: Friendly, helpful staff are one of the most consistent positives in recent reviews.

• Amenities: Indoor heated pool, sauna, whirlpool, compact gym and Tap Kitchen & Bar.

• Fees and surprises: Parking costs extra and has only 15 spaces; breakfast may be extra depending on your booking.
