Fingal is a five-star floating boutique hotel that earns its luxury label rather than relying on the novelty of sleeping aboard a ship. We'd choose it for a celebration: recent Tripadvisor and Expedia guests repeatedly praise the personal service, immaculate cabins, comfortable beds and excellent breakfasts. Warm wood, brass fittings and lighthouse-inspired details give the interiors character without turning them into a nautical theme park.

The compromises are mostly practical. Leith offers restaurants and convenient trams, but Edinburgh's central sights are not on your doorstep. Classic Cabins are compact at 20 square metres, most cabins have limited porthole views, and the windows do not open. There is no pool or gym.
