Axel's take on Lakewood: #6 of 6 in Cleveland, 3.5/10
Choose neighborhood restaurants and queer community over doorstep sightseeing. Lakewood's neighborhood character and lower typical rates appeal, but limited hotel choice and inconvenient sightseeing connections keep it last overall.
Lakewood feels lived-in rather than visitor-built: Detroit and Madison avenues have independent restaurants, coffee shops and bars, with residential streets between them. Lakewood Park's Solstice Steps make a worthwhile lakeside detour, not a beach outside every door. Its LGBTQ+ community and neighborhood venues make this my strongest pick for queer travelers wanting a local base.
The trade-off is sightseeing logistics: downtown and University Circle are outings, not casual walks, and the Red Line bypasses the main dining streets. Expect buses or rideshares. Also disregard older guides recommending Studio West 117: it closed in December 2025. Choose Lakewood for longer stays and neighborhood evenings, not a one-night checklist trip.
- Best for: food lovers, LGBTQ+ travelers, travelers on a budget, nightlife
- Skip it if: You have one night for Cleveland's major sights; You expect a downtown-style rail connection
- Getting around: Use 26/26A on Detroit or 55-series buses on Clifton for downtown; dining stretches are walkable. From CLE, take a taxi or Red Line plus a connecting bus; CAK is a road transfer.
- After dark: Evenings revolve around neighborhood restaurants, bars and live-music venues rather than downtown event crowds; choose a side street if you want less activity.
- Rates: Typical Axel rate $90 a night · usually 9% under the public rate
Where to stay in Cleveland: every neighborhood ranked
Where to look in Lakewood
- Edgewater Drive near West 117th. Look here for a residential Gold Coast setting near the lake, rather than Lakewood's main restaurant streets. Hotels here: Travelodge by Wyndham Cleveland Lakewood.
- Detroit Avenue at Warren Road. Start here if neighborhood restaurants and a recognizable town center matter more than proximity to the eastern motel cluster.
How to choose
- Choose Travelodge by Wyndham Cleveland Lakewood if the Gold Coast location and free parking are essential, despite serious cleanliness and maintenance concerns.
- Choose Days Inn by Wyndham Cleveland Lakewood if this exact Lake Avenue location is essential; otherwise, recurring cleaning and door-lock complaints argue against it.
What paying more buys
Days Inn costs slightly more than Travelodge, but its reviews offer no convincing comfort or cleanliness upgrade. Both have recurring maintenance and dirty-room complaints, so paying more between these two is not worthwhile for a better night's stay. Choose only for an essential location requirement, not as a comfort upgrade. Typical rates with Axel here run from $86 a night at Travelodge by Wyndham Cleveland Lakewood to $93 at Days Inn by Wyndham Cleveland Lakewood (last 30 days).
