Axel's take: 7.7/10

A practical downtown base with friendly staff, useful extras and visibly dated rooms. a no-frills budget hotel near Playhouse Square, scored for what it is.

This no-frills budget hotel is a strong pick for a downtown show or a Cleveland Clinic visit, provided you care more about convenience than polished interiors. Tripadvisor and Expedia guests repeatedly praise helpful staff, clean rooms and comfortable beds. Playhouse Square is close by, hot breakfast is included, and the hotel's advertised free hospital shuttle adds genuine usefulness for medical visits.

The compromise is condition: recent guests across both sites describe worn furnishings and a building that needs updating. Broken ice machines also recur in recent reports. Parking is available but generally costs extra, despite some guests describing it as included. We'd choose it for a practical short stay and good downtown value; we'd skip it if fresh decor and consistently well-maintained facilities matter more than location.

• Best for: budget-minded theatergoers; Cleveland Clinic visitors; short downtown stays

• Watch out for: dated rooms and worn furnishings; recurring broken ice-machine reports; parking generally costs extra

• Location: Near Playhouse Square and across from Cleveland State University, with downtown attractions within walking distance.

• Rooms: Comfortable beds earn praise; furnishings show age, with microwaves and refrigerators listed by the hotel.

• Cleanliness: Recent Tripadvisor and Expedia reviews generally praise clean rooms despite the property's worn condition.

• Service: Friendly, helpful staff are a consistent strength across recent guest reviews.

• Amenities: Free hot breakfast, Wi-Fi, a fitness center and an advertised free hospital shuttle.

• Fees and surprises: Confirm parking inclusions; the hotel requires a payment card and an additional incidental authorization.
