#2 of 2 hotels in Elmwood Village & Museum District by Axel's take. Elmwood Village & Museum District is #3 of 6 places to stay in Buffalo. The best hotels in Elmwood Village & Museum District, ranked · Where to stay in Buffalo
Axel's take: 8.3/10
Go for the architecture and museum access, not flawless full-service polish. a historic boutique hotel on Buffalo’s museum-side park campus, scored for what it is.
The Richardson is a historic boutique hotel in a restored former psychiatric hospital, and a strong pick if character matters more than predictable chain-hotel convenience. Its soaring ceilings, enormous corridors and Olmsted-designed grounds give it a sense of place few mid-range hotels can match. Recent Expedia guests repeatedly praise clean, comfortable rooms and friendly staff; Tripadvisor is more mixed. The nearby Buffalo AKG and Burchfield Penney make this an especially appealing base for art lovers.
The compromises are practical: guests across sites mention missing mini-fridges, and dining service can be uneven. Breakfast currently costs extra. The campus also remains a restoration project, including the Lipsey Architecture Center construction and the hotel’s entrance-restoration work; check access arrangements before arrival. We’d skip it for a downtown-focused trip or if seamless service matters more than the building.
-
Best for: architecture and history enthusiasts; art-museum weekends; couples seeking a distinctive stay
-
Watch out for: campus construction and entrance restoration; mini-fridges not standard in guest reports; uneven dining service
-
Location: Convenient for Buffalo AKG, Burchfield Penney and Elmwood Village, rather than downtown.
-
Rooms: Characterful rooms with high ceilings; sizes vary, and guests repeatedly note missing mini-fridges.
-
Cleanliness: A consistent strength in recent Expedia reviews and Tripadvisor’s overall cleanliness rating.
-
Service: Recent front-desk feedback is strongly positive; dining and problem handling draw more mixed reports.
-
Amenities: Lounge dining, paid breakfast, free Wi-Fi, a 24-hour gym and extensive grounds.
-
Fees and surprises: The official site advertises free self-parking and no destination fees; confirm restoration-related access changes.
