#4 of 5 hotels in Olive Drive by Axel's take. Olive Drive is #7 of 7 places to stay in Bakersfield. The best hotels in Olive Drive, ranked · Where to stay in Bakersfield

Axel's take: 4.9/10

Convenient highway access cannot outweigh recurring cleanliness and maintenance problems. a basic 2-star roadside motel off Highway 99, scored for what it is.

Vagabond Inn Bakersfield North is a basic 2-star roadside motel, and we'd treat it as a last-resort stopover rather than a dependable budget pick. Highway 99 access, nearby restaurants and free parking are practical advantages. Expedia and Booking.com guests often praise the staff, and some report clean rooms and comfortable beds. But the overall feedback falls below what even a simple motel should deliver.

Recent reviews across those platforms describe dirty rooms, cockroaches, lingering odors and malfunctioning equipment—not just dated decor. Some guests also report feeling uncomfortable around the property. Breakfast needs checking: the hotel still advertises it, but several August–September 2026 guests found none, with one attributing the suspension to renovations. Fridges and microwaves are listed as request-only in several room categories. We'd skip it for family trips, longer stays or anyone prioritizing reliable cleanliness.

Best for: drivers needing highway access; budget travelers comfortable with substantial trade-offs
Watch out for: recurring cleanliness and cockroach reports; inconsistent room maintenance; breakfast reportedly suspended during renovations
Location: Convenient for Highway 99 and nearby dining; some guests report feeling uncomfortable around the property.
Rooms: Comfort varies; recent complaints include odors and faulty equipment, with fridges and microwaves request-only in several categories.
Cleanliness: A recurring weakness across recent reviews, including multiple cockroach reports despite some clean-room experiences.
Service: Friendly, helpful staff are the most consistent positive, though complaint handling receives mixed feedback.
Amenities: Free parking and Wi-Fi; an outdoor pool is listed, but confirm availability and breakfast before booking.
Fees and surprises: Pets incur a nightly fee; recent guests report missing breakfast, with renovations cited as a reason.
