#9 of 9 hotels in California Avenue by Axel's take. California Avenue is #3 of 7 places to stay in Bakersfield. The best hotels in California Avenue, ranked · Where to stay in Bakersfield

Axel's take: 5.3/10

Useful roadside basics, but recurring cleanliness complaints make this a gamble. a basic 2-star roadside motel near Highway 99, scored for what it is.

This basic 2-star motel near Highway 99 has the right ingredients for a cheap Bakersfield stopover: free parking, continental breakfast, Wi-Fi and an outdoor pool. We'd consider it only for a budget-first overnight. Recent Expedia guests often praise helpful staff, comfortable beds and good value, but the overall picture is below what we'd want even from a simple motel.

The sticking point is consistency. Tripadvisor and Expedia reviews from 2026 repeatedly mention inadequate cleaning, cockroaches and worn rooms, alongside genuinely positive stays. These are more consequential than dated decor. Breakfast is basic, and some guests report nighttime noise. We'd skip it if reliable cleanliness or uninterrupted sleep matters more than keeping costs down; the included extras don't outweigh those risks.

Best for: budget-first overnight stops; drivers needing free parking
Watch out for: recurring cockroach and cleaning reports; uneven room condition; nighttime noise
Location: Convenient access to Highway 99; better suited to drivers than a walkable city break.
Rooms: Fridges and microwaves are listed, but guests report uneven upkeep and occasional broken equipment.
Cleanliness: Positive reports coexist with repeated recent complaints about pests, stains and insufficient cleaning.
Service: Helpful staff earn frequent praise, though some guests describe difficult check-ins and poor problem handling.
Amenities: Free continental breakfast, Wi-Fi, parking and an outdoor pool; expect a limited breakfast spread.
Fees and surprises: A deposit and pet fees apply; smoking rooms are sold, so select the room type carefully.
