#8 of 9 hotels in California Avenue by Axel's take. California Avenue is #3 of 7 places to stay in Bakersfield. The best hotels in California Avenue, ranked · Where to stay in Bakersfield

Axel's take: 6.0/10

Convenient for a stopover, but inconsistent upkeep makes it a cautious pick. A basic 2-star roadside motel near Highway 99, scored for what it is.

This is a basic 2-star roadside motel whose strongest selling points are easy freeway access, nearby restaurants and free parking. We'd consider it only for a practical overnight stop. Expedia guests include plenty who found clean rooms and friendly staff, but the overall picture across sites is mixed rather than reliably good. Current listings appear to market the property as TrueStay Inn; Wyndham's old hotel page now redirects, so confirm the name before booking.

The main drawback is inconsistent housekeeping and maintenance. Recent Tripadvisor guests describe dirty carpets, stained bedding and worn bathrooms, while Trip.com guests mention noise, scant breakfast and patchy Wi-Fi. These are more than complaints about dated decor. A pool and included breakfast add usefulness, but we'd skip it for a longer stay or if dependable cleanliness matters more than keeping costs down.

Best for: Budget-conscious drivers; One-night road-trip stops
Watch out for: Inconsistent cleaning and worn rooms; Noise and unreliable Wi-Fi; Apparent rebranding to TrueStay Inn
Location: Convenient for Highway 99 and nearby restaurants; better suited to drivers than downtown sightseeing on foot.
Rooms: Basic rooms with refrigerators; recurring reports of worn carpets, furniture and bathroom fittings.
Cleanliness: Mixed: some Expedia guests praise clean rooms, while recent Tripadvisor guests report dirty carpets and bedding.
Service: Friendly staff earn praise, but complaint handling and check-in experiences are inconsistent.
Amenities: Current TrueStay listings advertise an outdoor pool, free parking, Wi-Fi and continental breakfast; breakfast expectations should stay modest.
Fees and surprises: Guests report a security deposit; confirm deposit terms, current branding and pet policies directly.
