Around Savannah Highway and Sam Rittenberg Boulevard, expect commercial roads and everyday conveniences rather than historic streets outside your door. Avondale provides a more compact restaurant-and-bar outing farther toward the river; do not assume it is walkable from every West Ashley address.

Families traveling by car can make this practical, particularly when combining downtown with Ashley River Road attractions. For a short first visit, however, repeated journeys undermine the convenience. The new Ashley River pedestrian crossing is still under construction, not a reason to plan a walking commute downtown.
