Axel's take on Westedge & Lockwood Boulevard: #4 of 6 in Charleston, 5.1/10
A practical medical-and-baseball base, not a substitute for the historic core. Riverfront character and useful peninsula connections lift it above the outer bases, though hotel choice and doorstep dining trail the leaders.
Along Lockwood Drive, the Ashley River replaces the old town’s narrow lanes. WestEdge combines newer development, groceries and medical-district connections, with Brittlebank Park and the RiverDogs’ ballpark nearby. This is a purposeful choice for hospital-related visits, baseball outings or travelers who prefer a less sightseeing-focused part of the peninsula.
Being on the peninsula does not mean the Market and King Street are easy doorstep outings. Plan to use the shuttle or a car rather than treating every dinner as a short stroll. Ashley River Crossing construction is ongoing, so do not count on the new pedestrian bridge as an existing connection. Skip this address for a walking-only historic weekend.
- Best for: business trips and conventions, sports fans
- Skip it if: You want historic sightseeing on your doorstep; Every dinner must be a short walk
- Getting around: DASH 213 serves Lockwood and connects to the Visitor Center; walk nearby parks and the ballpark; from CHS, take Route 11 then 213, or use a taxi.
- After dark: Expect activity around baseball and other events rather than a continuous late-night restaurant district.
- Rates: Typical Axel rate $247 a night · usually 9% under the public rate
