Where to stay in Shanghai: the 8 best neighborhoods, ranked

Updated October 20, 2026 · Ranked by Axel from research, its own hotel reviews and recent rates · How we rank

Stay around People's Square & Nanjing Road for a first Shanghai visit: metro connections and straightforward sightseeing make it the easiest base. Families should choose Xintiandi for walkable dinners and Taiping Lake. Pick the Former French Concession for food, bars and leafy streets, or Xujiahui for a budget-focused stay that trades central sightseeing convenience for strong value.

Choose Shanghai by the streets you want to come home to—shopping avenues, leafy lanes or waterfront promenades—and check the nearest station before booking, with Axel ranking each neighborhood on transport, nearby food and sights, hotel quality, value for money and, most heavily, how rewarding it feels as a place to stay.

People's Square and East Nanjing Road make Shanghai easy to organize: major metro connections, the pedestrian shopping street and a straightforward walk toward the Bund. The park, theaters and large stores give you plenty to build a day around. Choose it when convenience matters more than leafy streets or a neighborhood you would visit just for dinner.

The trade-off is a busy, commercial atmosphere. Museum visitors should also note a consequential change: from July 9, 2026, through November 14, 2027, the Shanghai Museum here hosts only its ancient Americas exhibition; the permanent collections are at Shanghai Museum East in Pudong.

Jing'an works because the useful and the enjoyable overlap. Around Jing'an Temple and West Nanjing Road, major stores and office towers sit beside historic lanes, while Yuyuan Road offers a gentler direction for wandering. The revived retail streets around Yongyuan Road add another reason to explore beyond the main malls.

Residents answering where-to-stay questions regularly favor the temple side of Jing'an for its restaurants, bars and access to the Former French Concession. The district name alone is not enough: check the actual street and station. Skip it only if waking beside the river is more important than an adaptable everyday base.

The Bund puts Shanghai's grand riverfront architecture and Pudong skyline outside your door. Zhongshan East First Road is the main event, with East Nanjing Road leading inland through the shopping district. Stay here if morning waterfront walks and returning to the illuminated skyline matter more than discovering residential backstreets.

The compromise is that the promenade is a destination rather than an everyday neighborhood. Your metro entrance may be several streets inland, and evening sightseeing brings crowds. Architecture lovers and travelers wanting a grand setting will enjoy it; light sleepers and people planning nightly bar-hopping should look west.

Around Anfu, Wukang, Donghu and Fuxing roads, the Former French Concession offers plane trees, lane houses, small shops and places to linger over coffee or dinner. The Hengfu streets also bring music institutions and architectural interest into ordinary neighborhood walks. Stay here if experiencing Shanghai's streets matters as much as checking off its landmarks.

Visitors particularly praise the dining and evening atmosphere around Fumin Road and South Shaanxi Road. The trade-off is that this is a broad neighborhood, not one interchangeable location: some addresses involve a meaningful station walk. Skip it if direct Pudong airport rail or waterfront views are essential.

restored shikumen · restaurant terraces · Taiping Lake · polished retail

    7.2/10

An easy, polished base for terrace dinners and walkable evenings.

Distinctive restored lanes and useful transport make an easy base, but fewer nearby choices and middling hotel value keep it below the leaders.

Xintiandi turns restored shikumen lanes around Madang Road and Taicang Road into an easy-to-navigate dining and shopping district. Taiping Lake adds breathing space, and the First CPC Congress memorial gives the neighborhood historical substance beyond its restaurant terraces. Dongtaili has expanded the dining and retail offer east along Dongtai Road.

Its appeal is predictability: couples and families can organize an evening without trekking across town. The compromise is polish rather than spontaneity; these are curated commercial lanes, not an untouched residential quarter. Skip it if you want low-key local streets or would rather discover small restaurants without a lifestyle-development backdrop.

Around Yu Garden, the City God Temple and Fangbang Middle Road, Shanghai trades skyscrapers for garden walls, tiled roofs, souvenir shops and traditional snacks. Walk east toward the South Bund for river views and a different architectural mood. This is a strong choice if Chinese gardens, temple precincts and food traditions interest you more than international shopping streets.

Do not mistake the bazaar for an untouched residential quarter: shopping and sightseeing dominate its busiest lanes. Addresses farther south also mean longer walks to the most useful metro interchange. Culture-focused travelers will enjoy the setting; late-night bar-hoppers and anyone wanting consistently peaceful streets should choose elsewhere.

Lujiazui is Shanghai at skyscraper scale: towers, major malls, elevated walkways and a landscaped riverfront facing the Bund. Shanghai Tower and the Oriental Pearl are the obvious draws, while riverside restaurants give the district more evening life than its purely corporate reputation suggests. It suits financial-district work and travelers who actively want this futuristic setting.

The distances between entrances, crossings and destinations can feel longer than the map suggests. Most lane-house wandering and much of the nightlife lie across the river. Stay near Lujiazui station rather than assuming any Pudong address is equally convenient; skip it if casual neighborhood exploration is your main pleasure.

Xujiahui is more useful than postcard-pretty: large malls and busy roads dominate first impressions, but the cathedral, Zikawei Library and Xujiahui Park give it a proper cultural and residential side. Grand Gateway 66 and Metro City make daily errands straightforward. It particularly suits travelers combining ordinary city life with shopping or events around Shanghai Stadium.

You will spend more time on trains reaching the Bund and old-city sights than from the strongest central bases. The major junction and station passages also make short distances less effortless than they look. Choose it for practical priorities; skip it if your first Shanghai mornings should begin among historic lanes or skyline views.

How Axel ranks neighborhoods

Axel ranks each neighborhood as a base for a visitor, not as a place to visit. Five scores out of 10 are blended into the score beside each name. The pages for each kind of trip weight how well a neighborhood fits that trip more heavily.

  • Getting around (20%): How many of the city’s most-visited sights are within easy reach, plus a direct train to the airport.
  • On your doorstep (15%): Places to eat, drink and see within a 10-minute walk, counted from OpenStreetMap.
  • Hotels (20%): Axel’s own reviews of the hotels here, and how many good ones there are to choose from.
  • Value (10%): Hotel quality for the money, from the rates Axel saw in the last 30 days, against the city as a whole.
  • Axel’s verdict (35%): How good a base it is for a visitor, from research into guides, forums, transit and local news.

Questions travelers ask

Should I stay in People's Square or Jing'an?

Choose People's Square & Nanjing Road for the easiest first visit; choose Jing'an if neighborhood restaurants and evenings matter more. People's Square leads overall through sightseeing convenience, transport and strong hotels. Jing'an follows closely, with historic lanes and bars around the temple, but weaker value. Check the actual street: not every Jing'an address is near the temple.

Where should families stay in Shanghai?

Xintiandi is our first choice for families, with walkable restaurant lanes, Taiping Lake and useful metro connections. People's Square & Nanjing Road is the close runner-up when sightseeing logistics take priority. Xintiandi makes evenings easier to keep local; People's Square offers the stronger transport base. Neither should be booked on the assumption that every street will be quiet.

What is the cheapest good area to stay in Shanghai?

Xujiahui is our top budget recommendation, rather than a guarantee of the cheapest individual room. It combines strong value with practical shopping and metro connections, at the cost of longer sightseeing journeys. The Former French Concession is runner-up and has the strongest value score, but a very limited reviewed hotel selection. Yu Garden & South Bund comes next.

Where can I stay without a car and get there by airport train?

People's Square & Nanjing Road is the best car-free base, with Jing'an second. Line 2 serves both areas directly from Pudong Airport and Hongqiao Terminal 2. From Hongqiao Terminal 1, Line 10 serves East Nanjing Road. Check your arrival terminal and the walk from the station to your hotel; a neighborhood's rail connection does not guarantee a short luggage walk.

Is the Former French Concession a good base for nightlife?

Yes—the Former French Concession is our leading nightlife base, especially for dining and small bars around Fumin Road and South Shaanxi Road. Visitors praise evenings here, but the neighborhood is broad and residential lanes can feel quite different. Xintiandi is runner-up for more concentrated terrace dining and bars. Choose the precise street according to how much evening activity you want nearby.

Where should I stay for a business trip or convention in Shanghai?

Lujiazui leads our business ranking, particularly for financial-district work, with excellent hotels and direct Line 2 airport rail. People's Square & Nanjing Road is runner-up for meetings spread across the city. For conventions, start with the exact venue and check the journey before booking: Lujiazui's business strengths do not make it the closest base for every exhibition or conference.

Should I stay near People's Square to visit the Shanghai Museum?

People's Square remains an excellent sightseeing base, but do not choose it solely for the museum's permanent collections. From July 9, 2026, through November 14, 2027, the People's Square building hosts only its ancient Americas exhibition; the permanent collections are at Shanghai Museum East in Pudong. Plan around the exhibition and building you actually want to visit.
