For most families, Holiday Inn Express & Suites in Centro & Quinta Avenida is the practical choice: two queens, breakfast and space for snacks. Hotel52 in Coco Beach & Punta Esmeralda is the lowest-cost option, but its doubles are narrow. Grand Velas in North Playa & Xcalacoco offers the most space. For beachfront access near restaurants, choose Mahekal in Mamitas Beach & Calle 38; for easy bus and ferry access, consider Hotel Colonial in Centro.
How to choose
- Choose Holiday Inn Express & Suites Playa Del Carmen by IHG if you want two queens, included breakfast and a walkable downtown base.
- Choose Hotel52 if keeping costs down matters more than bed width or room polish.
- Choose Grand Velas Riviera Maya - All Inclusive if you want the most floor space and accept a shuttle to the beach.
- Choose Mahekal Beach Front Resort & Spa if you want beachfront accommodation with restaurants within walking distance.

Questions families ask
Should we book two queens or two doubles?
Two queens give each adult-and-child pair more sleeping width. Holiday Inn Express and Grand Velas have confirmed two-queen configurations; Mahekal also specifies queens despite its room name. Hotel52’s doubles are only 130 centimetres wide. At Xcaret Mexico and Hotel Angelo’s, get the bed size and two-bed assignment confirmed before booking.
Can a crib or rollaway solve the sleeping arrangement?
Do not rely on either without room-specific confirmation. Grand Velas offers free cribs but no rollaways; Xcaret Mexico and Hotel Colonial also list no rollaways. Holiday Inn Express accepts requests for both, with fees unspecified. Petit Lafitte lists free cribs and rollaways on request. An extra bed does not automatically raise the room’s occupancy limit.
How much more does one room for four cost than a room for two?
The difference varies sharply. The compared four-person room was only about one percent more at Hotel52 and thirteen percent more at Hotel Lunasol than each hotel’s cheapest room for two on the same night. Holiday Inn Express was roughly half again as much, while Riu Palace Riviera Maya was double. Treat these as comparisons, not guaranteed supplements.
Which neighborhood works best without a car?
Centro & Quinta Avenida works well for walking to restaurants, shops and the beach; Hotel Colonial also puts you near the ADO terminal and ferry. Mahekal combines beachfront access with walkable dining around Calle 38. Petit Lafitte requires transport downtown, while Hotel Angelo’s means roughly a 20–25-minute walk to the beach and tourist areas.
Which rooms give four people the most space?
Grand Velas is the clear space leader: the hotel lists its Zen Grand suite at 1,377 square feet, although another published figure is smaller. It remains open-plan, not a separate bedroom for children. Holiday Inn Express offers around 429 square feet with useful food-storage facilities. Mahekal’s rooms are much smaller, though their terraces provide additional outdoor space.
