Where to stay in Denver without a car: Downtown & LoDo

Updated October 15, 2026 · Ranked by Axel from research, its own hotel reviews and recent rates · How we rank

Downtown & LoDo is the clear choice without a car: the airport train arrives at Union Station, and restaurants and major sights are walkable. Convention Center & Theatre District comes second for central walking access, but its station closure means planning an onward trip from Union Station rather than expecting rail outside the door.

Choose the streets around 14th and Stout when your trip revolves around the Colorado Convention Center or a show at the Performing Arts Complex. Both are walkable, 16th Street is close, and Civic Center and the art museums lie to the south. This is a practical downtown base rather than one you book for its personality.

Capitol Hill feels more residential than LoDo: old mansions, apartment buildings, neighborhood cafés and an established LGBTQ+ scene along Colfax. Around Grant, Sherman and Pennsylvania streets, you are well placed for the State Capitol and Molly Brown House, with the Golden Triangle's art museums across Broadway. Stay here for history and a less convention-led version of Denver.

Book RiNo for a trip built around eating, drinking and street art. Larimer and Walnut streets mix warehouse buildings, murals, breweries and serious restaurants, while Denver Central Market makes an easy daytime stop. Five Points has a distinct story around Welton Street, rooted in Black history and jazz; explore beyond the brewery corridor.

Cherry Creek is the polished alternative to downtown: boutiques and galleries along Second and Third avenues, destination dinners, and the shopping center across First Avenue. The compact shopping streets work well on foot, and the Cherry Creek Trail gives runners and cyclists an escape from traffic. Choose it for shopping or a stay where the immediate neighborhood matters more than downtown sightseeing.

This is a practical longer-stay base, not a substitute for Cherry Creek North's shopping streets. Around Colorado Boulevard and Alameda Avenue, everyday shops and restaurants sit alongside wide roads and parking lots. The Cherry Creek Trail is the useful exception: a calmer walking and cycling route, with Infinity Park and Four Mile Historic Park providing reasons to spend time locally.
