Axel's take: 8.8/10

A strong budget base for waterfront views, clean rooms and sightseeing on foot. A simple waterfront hostel with dorms and private rooms on Skeppsholmen, scored for what it is.

This is a simple waterfront hostel, and a strong pick for seeing Stockholm without paying for full-service hotel comforts. Booking.com and Expedia guests consistently praise the clean rooms and bathrooms, helpful staff and well-equipped communal kitchen. The setting opposite Gamla Stan is the standout: central enough for sightseeing, with a calmer island atmosphere.

Book for the land-based hostel, not a ship cabin: af Chapman no longer provides hostel accommodation. Many room types share bathrooms, so check your selection carefully. Recent guests also mention noise through walls and occasional school-group disruption, despite otherwise strong feedback. Breakfast costs extra, and the metro takes roughly ten minutes on foot. We'd skip it if guaranteed quiet or an en-suite bathroom is essential unless you've confirmed the room arrangements.

  • Best for: Budget-minded sightseers; Families comfortable with hostel facilities; Travelers who like self-catering

  • Watch out for: No hostel accommodation aboard af Chapman; Shared bathrooms in many room categories; Possible noise from neighboring rooms and groups

  • Location: Waterfront island setting facing the old town; nearby bus stop and roughly ten-minute walk to the metro.

  • Rooms: Dorms and private rooms, including some en-suite options; guests generally find them comfortable, but sound insulation can disappoint.

  • Cleanliness: A consistent strength across recent Booking.com and Expedia reviews, including shared showers and toilets.

  • Service: Helpful staff receive repeated praise, and the official site confirms a round-the-clock reception.

  • Amenities: Communal kitchen, café, lounge with billiards, laundry facilities and free Wi-Fi cover the hostel essentials well.

  • Fees and surprises: Linen, towels and final cleaning are included; breakfast and nearby public parking cost extra; card payments only.
