Axel's take: 8.3/10

A strong Old Town base with excellent breakfast, but choose your room carefully. a historic 4-star boutique hotel on Stockholm’s Old Town waterfront, scored for what it is.

Hotel Gamla Stan is a historic 4-star boutique hotel whose waterfront location and breakfast are its strongest selling points. Spread across three old buildings, it offers more character than a standard chain hotel, with the Royal Palace and Old Town restaurants close by. Expedia and Tripadvisor guests repeatedly praise the generous breakfast, helpful reception team and clean rooms. We'd choose it for a sightseeing-focused Stockholm break rather than a full-service luxury stay.

Room choice matters: sizes and layouts vary, and smaller rooms can have cramped bathrooms or awkward sloping ceilings. There is no central air-conditioning, and summer guests report warm rooms and street or nearby music noise when windows are open. Entrance steps also deserve attention if mobility is limited. We'd skip it if spacious rooms, reliable cooling or step-free access are essentials.

• Best for: first-time Stockholm sightseers; couples who enjoy historic hotels; travelers who prioritize breakfast

• Watch out for: no central air-conditioning; small rooms and variable layouts; entrance steps and occasional nighttime noise

• Location: Old Town waterfront, close to the Royal Palace, restaurants and sightseeing boats.

• Rooms: Characterful but uneven in size; check the category carefully, especially for attic rooms.

• Cleanliness: A consistent strength across Booking.com, Expedia and recent guest comments.

• Service: Helpful, welcoming reception staff attract repeated praise; reception is staffed around the clock.

• Amenities: Breakfast and Wi-Fi included; simple bar menu; management confirms a basic gym but no spa.

• Fees and surprises: Cashless hotel with no on-site parking; no in-room safes, and cots or extra beds cost extra.
