#3 of 7 hotels in The Bund by Axel's take. The Bund is #3 of 8 places to stay in Shanghai. The best hotels in The Bund, ranked · Where to stay in Shanghai

Axel's take: 8.8/10

Classic Bund luxury with generous rooms, though some details fall short of flawless. a classic five-star luxury hotel combining a historic Bund landmark with a modern tower, scored for what it is.

This five-star pairs the former Shanghai Club with a modern tower, and it's a strong pick for travelers who prefer traditional grandeur to minimalist design. Booking.com and Expedia guests consistently praise the spacious rooms, comfortable beds, cleanliness and helpful staff. The Bund setting is the main draw; book an explicitly river-view category if the skyline matters. Long Bar, an indoor pool and a spa round out the luxury offering.

The reservations are about consistency rather than fundamentals. Some recent Booking.com and Tripadvisor guests report musty air-conditioning smells or maintenance glitches, despite overwhelmingly positive feedback overall. Expedia lists a 2025 remodel, but that shouldn't be read as a guarantee that every room feels new. We'd choose it for history, space and sightseeing, but skip it if contemporary interiors and near-flawless upkeep are priorities.

  • Best for: couples seeking classic luxury; first-time Shanghai sightseers; travelers drawn to historic hotels

  • Watch out for: river views depend on room category; some recent reports of musty air-conditioning; occasional room-maintenance glitches

  • Location: Excellent Bund base for waterfront walks; nearby metro stations require roughly a 10–15-minute walk.

  • Rooms: Generous rooms and bathrooms with traditional styling; city-view and river-view categories differ.

  • Cleanliness: Strong cleanliness feedback across Booking.com and Expedia, with occasional damp-smell complaints.

  • Service: Helpful, attentive staff are a consistent strength, although some guests describe uneven problem handling.

  • Amenities: Indoor pool, fitness center, spa, several dining venues and the historic Long Bar.

  • Fees and surprises: Check breakfast inclusion and incidental-deposit requirements; river views are not standard.
