Axel's take: 8.5/10

A strong sightseeing base, with helpful staff and some aging-hotel trade-offs. an upscale full-service hotel beside Shanghai’s Old Town, scored for what it is.

This upscale full-service hotel is a strong pick for exploring Shanghai, rather than for cutting-edge luxury. Yu Garden and the metro are close by, and recent Expedia and Trip.com guests repeatedly praise clean, comfortable rooms, helpful staff and the generous breakfast selection. The indoor pool adds a welcome extra after sightseeing, while some rooms offer excellent Old Town and skyline views.

The trade-off is an older property: Tripadvisor guests mention dated interiors, and cigarette smells crop up across several sources despite the smoke-free policy. Nearby construction remains worth checking: an October 2026 Trip.com review describes awkward access around the works, while a recent Reddit contributor reports noise during a June stay. We’d choose it for location and dependable comfort, but skip it if fresh design or reliably quiet surroundings are priorities.

• Best for: first-time Shanghai visitors; sightseers using the metro; families wanting full-service comforts

• Watch out for: nearby construction and awkward entrance access; dated interiors; occasional cigarette smells

• Location: Excellent for Yu Garden and Old Town, with Yuyuan Garden metro station across the road.

• Rooms: Generally comfortable and roomy; condition and views vary, with some dated décor reported.

• Cleanliness: Strong overall feedback for housekeeping, although occasional smoke smells undermine the smoke-free promise.

• Service: Helpful staff are a recurring strength, with especially warm feedback for housekeeping and lounge teams.

• Amenities: Indoor pool, whirlpool, fitness center, three restaurants and a club lounge; breakfast is widely praised.

• Fees and surprises: Breakfast and parking can cost extra; confirm lounge inclusion and current nearby construction before booking.
