Axel's take: 8.2/10

A strong central base with helpful staff, but rooms show their age. an established 5-star business hotel in central Shanghai, scored for what it is.

Jin Jiang Tower is an established 5-star business hotel near Huaihai Road, and we'd choose it for location and practical comfort rather than cutting-edge luxury. Middle Huaihai Road metro is across the street, with shops and restaurants nearby. Recent Trip.com and Expedia guests repeatedly praise helpful staff, comfortable rooms and the extensive breakfast. The indoor pool and upper-floor city views add appeal.

The compromise is condition: Trip.com, Tripadvisor and Expedia reviews describe aging interiors, with some bathrooms and carpets falling short of five-star expectations. Cleanliness feedback is predominantly positive, though not uniformly so, and breakfast can get crowded. It's a strong pick for sightseeing or business if you accept an older hotel; we'd skip it if pristine finishes and a consistently polished luxury experience are priorities.

• Best for: sightseers using the metro; business travelers; travelers prioritizing location over modern design

• Watch out for: aging rooms and bathrooms; breakfast crowds; room views vary

• Location: Across from Middle Huaihai Road metro, near shopping and plenty of restaurants.

• Rooms: Generally comfortable, with appealing views in some categories; dated finishes recur in reviews.

• Cleanliness: Mostly praised, but occasional dust and bathroom-maintenance complaints temper confidence.

• Service: Recent guests frequently praise friendly staff and efficient check-in.

• Amenities: Indoor pool, free Wi-Fi and several dining options, including a high-floor revolving restaurant.

• Fees and surprises: Breakfast may cost extra unless included; airport transfers carry a charge.
