Axel's take: 8.5/10

A strong sightseeing base, with helpful staff and some dated rooms. An upscale, full-service city hotel on Nanjing Road Pedestrian Street, scored for what it is.

This upscale, full-service Crowne Plaza is a strong pick for seeing central Shanghai without spending much time in taxis. Nanjing Road shopping is outside, and People’s Square is an easy walk. Recent Expedia and Tripadvisor guests repeatedly praise helpful staff and comfortable rooms; breakfast and the Club Lounge also earn positive mentions. The hotel’s indoor pool and gym make it more than just a convenient place to sleep.

The trade-off is polish: several guests describe dated interiors, and room condition is not uniformly praised. Cleanliness feedback is predominantly positive, although occasional housekeeping lapses warrant checking your room on arrival. Expect a deposit, paid parking and breakfast charges unless included in your booking. We’d choose it for location and practical comfort, but skip it if you want consistently fresh interiors or a quieter neighborhood.

• Best for: First-time Shanghai visitors; Shopping and sightseeing trips; Travelers wanting full-service facilities

• Watch out for: Some dated interiors; Occasional housekeeping lapses; Busy shopping-street setting

• Location: Direct access to Nanjing Road Pedestrian Street, with People’s Square within walking distance.

• Rooms: Generally comfortable; recent guests still describe some interiors as dated.

• Cleanliness: Mostly praised across guest reviews, with occasional significant exceptions.

• Service: Helpful, friendly staff are a recurring strength, including recent reports of effective problem handling.

• Amenities: IHG lists a 20-meter indoor pool, fitness center, three restaurants and free Wi-Fi.

• Fees and surprises: A deposit applies; parking and breakfast cost extra unless covered by your booking.
