Axel's take: 8.5/10

A strong sightseeing base with spacious rooms, though the style shows its age. a traditional, full-service 4-star beside Nanjing Road, scored for what it is.

Central Hotel Shanghai is a traditional, full-service 4-star whose biggest advantage is location: Nanjing Road’s pedestrian shopping street is moments away, with the metro, People’s Square and the Bund within walking distance. We’d pick it for comfortable sightseeing rather than contemporary design. Recent Tripadvisor, Expedia and Trip.com guests repeatedly praise spacious, clean rooms and comfortable beds, making this a strong choice for travelers who prioritize the basics.

The trade-off is an older-fashioned interior, with recent Trip.com guests still noting dated facilities. Service earns plenty of praise, but less welcoming interactions recur across Trip.com and Tripadvisor. Breakfast satisfies many guests, although some find the selection repetitive or limited in Western options. Laundry charges also draw complaints. We’d skip it if fresh design and consistently polished service matter more than space and convenience.

• Best for: first-time Shanghai visitors; shoppers and metro-based sightseers; travelers who prefer spacious rooms

• Watch out for: dated interiors and facilities; occasionally uneven service; costly hotel laundry

• Location: Steps from Nanjing Road; roughly 7–8 minutes to East Nanjing Road metro and 15–20 minutes to the Bund.

• Rooms: Generously sized, comfortable rooms; traditional furnishings and some aging fittings.

• Cleanliness: A consistent strength across recent reviews, supported by strong cleanliness ratings.

• Service: Mostly helpful, with recurring reports of brusque or inflexible interactions.

• Amenities: WorldHotels confirms restaurants, a complimentary gym, spa and sauna; check sauna access before relying on it.

• Fees and surprises: Breakfast inclusion depends on the booking; laundry costs extra, and guests report check-in deposits.
