Axel's take: 8.3/10

A comfortable stopover with lovely grounds, but not a walkable city base. An older upscale business hotel with resort-style grounds outside central San José, scored for what it is.

Barceló San José is an older, full-service business hotel in La Uruca, with gardens and an outdoor pool that make it appealing before or after a Costa Rica road trip. It's a strong pick for comfort and facilities rather than contemporary luxury. Booking.com and Expedia guests consistently praise spacious, clean rooms, helpful staff and the generous breakfast selection. Free parking and a complimentary airport shuttle add practical value.

The compromise is location: downtown sightseeing generally means arranging transport, not stepping outside into the action. Recent Tripadvisor and Expedia reviews also flag aging décor and bathrooms, although cleanliness remains a clear strength overall. We'd choose it for a relaxed stopover or business stay, but skip it for polished luxury or exploring on foot. Arrange the shuttle at least 36 hours ahead and check whether breakfast is included.

• Best for: First or last nights of a road trip; Business travelers; Families wanting pool time

• Watch out for: Transport needed for downtown sightseeing; Aging room décor and bathrooms; Airport shuttle requires advance arrangements

• Location: Residential La Uruca, outside the downtown sightseeing core; better suited to travelers using transport.

• Rooms: Generally spacious and comfortable, but décor and bathroom condition show the property's age.

• Cleanliness: A consistent strength across Booking.com ratings and recent Expedia guest feedback.

• Service: Friendly, helpful staff receive repeated praise, though some Tripadvisor guests report uneven Premium Level service.

• Amenities: Outdoor pools, gardens, gym, sports courts and three restaurants provide substantial on-site variety.

• Fees and surprises: Parking is free; arrange the complimentary shuttle 36 hours ahead and confirm breakfast inclusion.
