Axel's take: 8.7/10

A dependable airport stopover, with clean rooms and a shuttle worth checking before arrival. a comfortable 3-star airport hotel in Alajuela, scored for what it is.

This 3-star airport hotel in Alajuela is a strong pick for a first or last night in Costa Rica. Tripadvisor, Expedia and Booking.com guests consistently praise clean, spacious rooms, comfortable beds and helpful staff. Restaurants and Walmart nearby make an overnight easy, while the outdoor pool and gym give it more usefulness than a basic transit stop. We'd choose it for airport convenience rather than a San José city break.

The main catch is that the free airport shuttle isn't round-the-clock: Marriott currently lists service every 30 minutes from 4 a.m. to 12:45 a.m. Breakfast normally costs extra, and guests disagree on whether it's worth it. Some also mention firm mattresses and sound carrying between rooms or from corridors. Light sleepers should request a quiet, nonconnecting room; travelers wanting character or central San José should look elsewhere.

• Best for: First and last nights near SJO; Families needing spacious rooms; Short business stopovers

• Watch out for: Airport shuttle stops overnight; Breakfast usually costs extra; Some reports of firm beds and room noise

• Location: In Alajuela near SJO, with restaurants and Walmart nearby; not a central San José base.

• Rooms: Spacious and comfortable for the class; some guests find mattresses firm or sound insulation lacking.

• Cleanliness: A consistent strength across recent Tripadvisor, Expedia and Booking.com feedback.

• Service: Friendly, helpful staff dominate the feedback, despite occasional reception complaints.

• Amenities: Outdoor pool, gym, Centro restaurant and free on-site parking; no verified indoor pool.

• Fees and surprises: Breakfast is not automatically included; long-term parking costs extra, and the free shuttle has an overnight gap.
