Axel's take: 8.7/10

A characterful airport stop with warm service, generous breakfast, and some dated edges. A colorful, family-run mid-range hotel near SJO airport, scored for what it is.

Adventure Inn is a colorful, family-run mid-range hotel in Cariari, and it's a strong pick for your first or last night in Costa Rica. Recent Tripadvisor, Booking.com, and Expedia guests repeatedly praise the helpful staff, clean, spacious rooms, and generous breakfast. The free round-trip airport transfer makes travel easier, while the pool, tropical murals, and on-site restaurant give it more personality than a standard airport stop.

The trade-off is polish: some guests describe tired furnishings, noisy air-conditioning, and disturbance from traffic or departing groups. Those complaints sit alongside overwhelmingly positive reports, but light sleepers should request a quieter room. This is an airport-area base, not a walk-out-the-door choice for downtown San José sightseeing. We'd choose it for friendly service and practical comfort, not sleek rooms or guaranteed silence.

• Best for: First and last nights in Costa Rica; Families wanting spacious rooms; Travelers who prefer independent hotels

• Watch out for: Some dated furnishings; Noise varies by room and neighboring guests; Outside downtown San José

• Location: Cariari airport-area base; the hotel estimates 10–15 minutes to SJO, depending on traffic.

• Rooms: Spacious and colorful rather than sleek; some guests report tired furnishings or loud air-conditioning.

• Cleanliness: Consistently praised across recent reviews, including strong Expedia cleanliness ratings.

• Service: A standout: guests repeatedly praise warm staff and help with transfers and onward travel.

• Amenities: Solar-heated pool, hot tub, restaurant, gym, and free Wi-Fi; breakfast is widely praised.

• Fees and surprises: Airport transfers and guest parking are free; confirm breakfast inclusion and arrange shuttle pickup ahead. Pets cost extra.
