Axel's take: 8.8/10

A characterful central base with excellent service, but warm rooms can compromise sleep. an upscale boutique hotel in Reykjavík’s historic center, scored for what it is.

Konsulat is an upscale, 50-room boutique hotel in a former department store, with more character than a standard chain property. It’s a strong pick for exploring Reykjavík on foot: Harpa, the harbor and restaurants are close by. Recent Tripadvisor and Expedia guests consistently praise the cleanliness, helpful staff and comfortable beds, with breakfast another frequent highlight. The included bathhouse, with its hot tub and sauna, is a worthwhile extra after sightseeing.

The main reservation is sleep comfort. Several recent guests describe warm, stuffy rooms; opening windows can bring in late-night street noise. Others report quiet stays, so room placement matters. Entry-level rooms can feel compact, and there’s no hotel parking—drivers need paid public parking nearby. We’d choose it for a car-free city break, but light sleepers who need a reliably cool room should look elsewhere.

• Best for: couples on city breaks; exploring Reykjavík without a car; boutique-hotel fans

• Watch out for: warm rooms and inconsistent cooling; late-night street noise; no on-site parking

• Location: Central and walkable, close to Harpa, the harbor, restaurants and excursion bus stops.

• Rooms: Characterful decor and comfortable beds; some standard rooms are compact, and overheating recurs in reviews.

• Cleanliness: Recent Tripadvisor and Expedia guests repeatedly praise clean rooms and well-kept public spaces.

• Service: Helpful, welcoming reception staff are a consistent strength across recent reviews.

• Amenities: Included hot tub and sauna, a 24-hour fitness area, breakfast and a wine bar with limited dining.

• Fees and surprises: No hotel parking or airport shuttle; nearby public parking costs extra, and breakfast inclusion depends on the booking.
