Axel's take: 8.7/10

A strong city base with helpful staff and worthwhile spa extras, but construction nearby. a contemporary 4-star city hotel with a small spa on Laugavegur, scored for what it is.

Midgardur is a contemporary 4-star at the eastern end of Reykjavík’s main shopping street: a strong pick for exploring on foot and unwinding afterward. Recent Tripadvisor and Expedia guests repeatedly praise the helpful staff, clean rooms and comfortable beds. The indoor and outdoor hot tubs and sauna give it an edge over a straightforward city hotel; breakfast generally earns good feedback too.

The rooms are practical rather than luxurious, and entry-level doubles are compact. Spa access costs extra with standard rooms but is included with Standard Plus and Deluxe categories; breakfast is not automatically included. More importantly, Hlemmur square and Borgarlína streetworks are underway nearby, with completion targeted for late 2027. Street-facing rooms can also catch traffic noise, and complimentary parking is extremely limited. We'd skip it if guaranteed quiet, spacious rooms or easy parking matter most.

• Best for: couples combining sightseeing and spa time; travelers exploring Reykjavík without a car; guests who value helpful front-desk service

• Watch out for: Hlemmur and Borgarlína construction nearby through late 2027; compact standard rooms and some street noise; very limited, unreservable parking

• Location: On Laugavegur’s eastern end, within walking distance of central shops and restaurants; nearby streetworks complicate the setting.

• Rooms: Contemporary and comfortable rather than luxurious; standard rooms average 17.7 square meters.

• Cleanliness: A consistent strength across recent guest feedback, including strong Expedia and Booking.com category ratings.

• Service: Recent reviews repeatedly praise friendly reception staff and practical help with travel arrangements.

• Amenities: Indoor and outdoor hot tubs, sauna, gym and Jörgensen Kitchen & Bar; breakfast generally receives positive feedback.

• Fees and surprises: Breakfast is not automatically included; standard rooms incur a spa charge, while Standard Plus and Deluxe include access.
