Axel's take: 8.1/10

A dependable sightseeing base, with clean rooms and useful breakfast rather than boutique charm. a straightforward 3-star near Hlemmur and Laugavegur, scored for what it is.

Klettur is a straightforward 3-star near Hlemmur and the eastern end of Laugavegur, and we'd pick it for practical comfort rather than atmosphere. Booking.com, Expedia and Tripadvisor guests broadly agree on its strengths: clean rooms, comfortable beds and helpful reception staff. The included continental breakfast adds value, while direct pickups by many tour operators make early sightseeing departures easier. Shops and restaurants are close, though the old center and harbor require a longer walk.

The compromises are plain rooms and a breakfast buffet that can feel repetitive and gets busy with tour groups. Expedia currently flags neighboring-building construction and possible noise; light sleepers should check its status before booking. Garage parking is limited and generally chargeable, despite the catalog's free-parking claim. We'd skip it for a characterful romantic stay, but it's a strong, uncomplicated base for sightseeing.

• Best for: travelers taking organized day tours; value-minded couples; short sightseeing stays

• Watch out for: neighboring construction warning; busy, repetitive breakfast buffet; limited, generally paid garage parking

• Location: Near Hlemmur, restaurants and Laugavegur; farther from the old center and harbor.

• Rooms: Simple, functional rooms with refrigerators and tea-making facilities; comfort earns regular praise.

• Cleanliness: A consistent strength across guest-review sites; housekeeping is primarily on request.

• Service: Reception staff are widely praised for helpful advice and tour assistance.

• Amenities: Included continental breakfast, bar, lounges, games room and free Wi-Fi; no on-site restaurant.

• Fees and surprises: Garage spaces are limited and usually paid; direct bookings have a conditional free-parking benefit. Expedia flags neighboring construction.
