Axel's take: 8.9/10

A strong old-town base with helpful staff, trading roominess for location. a historic 4-star hotel in Reykjavík’s old town, scored for what it is.

Hotel Reykjavík Centrum is a historic 4-star that makes a strong base for exploring Reykjavík on foot. Its characterful buildings put restaurants, museums and the harbour within easy reach, with tour pickup at Bus Stop 1 nearby. Booking.com, Expedia and Tripadvisor guests consistently praise clean, comfortable rooms and helpful staff; breakfast is another recurring highlight. We'd choose it for a city break where location and dependable comfort matter more than sprawling facilities.

The compromises are worth knowing: some rooms and showers feel compact, rooms can get warm, and street-facing rooms can catch nightlife noise. Request a rear-facing room if sleep is a priority. Housekeeping is by request, breakfast isn't included in every booking, and parking means using nearby public spaces or garages. We'd skip it if generous room sizes or effortless car access are essential.

• Best for: first-time Reykjavík visitors; couples on a city break; travelers joining guided excursions

• Watch out for: warm rooms and possible nightlife noise; compact rooms and showers; no hotel parking; housekeeping by request

• Location: Excellent old-town position for walking to restaurants, museums, the harbour and Bus Stop 1.

• Rooms: Comfortable rather than expansive; recurring mentions of small showers, warmth and street noise.

• Cleanliness: Strong cleanliness feedback across Booking.com, Expedia and Tripadvisor.

• Service: Friendly, helpful staff are a consistent strength, particularly for local advice and excursions.

• Amenities: Breakfast buffet, café-bar, free Wi-Fi and complimentary gym access; breakfast inclusion varies.

• Fees and surprises: Lodging tax is charged on arrival; public parking is separate, and room cleaning must be requested.
