Axel's take: 8.3/10

A friendly, practical base with useful freebies, rather than downtown polish. a simple, family-friendly 3-star just outside central Reykjavik, scored for what it is.

Hotel Orkin is a simple 3-star with a guesthouse feel, and it's a strong pick if you want a welcoming Reykjavik base rather than stylish surroundings. Booking.com and Expedia guests repeatedly praise the helpful staff, cleanliness and breakfast. Included parking, daytime tea and coffee, and afternoon cake make it good value for travelers who appreciate practical extras. Family rooms and a games room add to its appeal for groups.

The trade-off is fairly basic accommodation: guests describe older furnishings, some compact rooms and particularly small bathrooms. Some family rooms put beds upstairs on a mezzanine, so check the layout if stairs are an issue. Expect roughly a 20-minute walk into the central sightseeing area. We'd skip it for a polished city break or nightlife on the doorstep; for a straightforward touring base, it delivers.

• Best for: road-trippers with rental cars; families and small groups; value-minded travelers happy to walk

• Watch out for: small bathrooms and basic furnishings; stairs inside some family rooms; roughly 20 minutes' walk to central sights

• Location: Outside the central sightseeing core, with groceries nearby and Hlemmur about a 10-minute walk away.

• Rooms: Simple private-bathroom rooms; sizes vary, and some larger rooms have mezzanine beds.

• Cleanliness: Generally well rated across sites, with recent Expedia guests continuing to praise clean rooms.

• Service: Friendly, helpful staff are the most consistent strength across Booking.com, Expedia and Tripadvisor.

• Amenities: Breakfast, free Wi-Fi, shared lounges and a games room; complimentary daytime drinks and afternoon cake.

• Fees and surprises: Breakfast and parking are included; confirm the room layout before booking if internal stairs would be difficult.
