Axel's take: 8.5/10

A dependable sightseeing base with excellent breakfast, but a busy big-hotel feel. a large, modern 4-star hotel near Laugavegur, scored for what it is.

Fosshotel Reykjavík is a large, modern 4-star near Laugavegur, and a strong pick for travelers organizing their stay around day trips. Recent Expedia and Tripadvisor guests repeatedly praise clean, comfortable rooms, helpful staff and the generous breakfast buffet. Bus Stop 12 beside the hotel makes excursion pickups particularly convenient, while the main shopping streets are a short walk away. Upper-floor views are another reason to choose it.

The trade-off is scale rather than intimacy: breakfast gets crowded, and guests report elevator queues at peak times. Rooms can run warm without air-conditioning. A September 2026 Trip.com guest also reported construction noise immediately outside; ask whether that work affects your room. Parking is public, not hotel-controlled. We'd skip it for boutique atmosphere or reliably cool sleeping conditions, but it's otherwise a convincing four-star base.

• Best for: travelers taking organized day tours; couples wanting comfort and breakfast; business travelers

• Watch out for: warm rooms without air-conditioning; crowded breakfast and peak-time elevator queues; recent report of construction noise outside

• Location: Near Laugavegur, with excursion pickup at Bus Stop 12 beside the hotel.

• Rooms: Comfortable and well equipped; upper floors offer views, but guests report warm rooms.

• Cleanliness: A consistent strength across recent guest feedback; Booking.com scores cleanliness 8.9/10.

• Service: Helpful front-desk staff receive repeated praise, including for resolving booking problems.

• Amenities: Popular breakfast buffet, Haust Bistro, Beer Garden and a gym that some guests find small.

• Fees and surprises: Check breakfast inclusion; public parking cannot be reserved, and early check-in costs extra when available.
