Axel's take: 8.0/10

A strong budget base for space and location, not full-service pampering. a budget apartment-style hotel near the Malecón, scored for what it is.

Suites Plaza del Rio is a budget apartment-style hotel beside the Cuale River, roughly two blocks from the Malecón. It’s a strong pick for families who want room to spread out and a kitchen rather than resort extras. Booking.com guests praise the apartment sizes and equipped kitchens; recent Expedia reviews repeatedly highlight cleanliness, helpful staff and walkability. For a simple downtown base, it delivers good value.

The trade-offs are older interiors and modest facilities: the rooftop pools are small, Jacuzzi-style soaking pools, not proper swimming pools. Some recent guests report air-conditioning problems, and September stays drew complaints about an unattended reception and slow maintenance follow-through. Expedia lists weekly housekeeping, so confirm cleaning arrangements and any extra charges. We’d skip it for polished service or a pool-centered holiday.

• Best for: families wanting kitchen facilities; budget travelers exploring on foot; longer stays needing extra space

• Watch out for: small soaking pools rather than swimming pools; inconsistent reception and maintenance response; weekly housekeeping; confirm extra cleaning charges

• Location: Beside the Cuale River, close to the Malecón, markets and restaurants; no on-site parking.

• Rooms: Spacious, simply furnished suites with kitchenettes and air conditioning; some recent guests report cooling problems.

• Cleanliness: Generally well rated, with repeated recent praise for clean rooms and kitchens.

• Service: Friendliness earns frequent praise, but several recent guests describe gaps in reception coverage or follow-through.

• Amenities: Rooftop terrace, two small Jacuzzi-style pools and Wi-Fi; official and Expedia elevator information conflicts, so verify accessibility.

• Fees and surprises: A breakage deposit is listed; housekeeping is weekly, and a recent guest reports extra cleaning charges.
