Axel's take: 8.7/10

A strong-value Old Town base, with friendly service and a few practical compromises. A simple, traditional 3-star in the heart of Zona Romántica, scored for what it is.

Posada de Roger is a simple, traditional 3-star that gets the important things right: cleanliness, welcoming staff and a walkable Zona Romántica location, a short stroll from Los Muertos Beach. Recent Tripadvisor and Expedia guests repeatedly praise the housekeeping and helpful team. We'd pick it for an affordable, characterful base rather than polished rooms or resort facilities. The plant-filled courtyard, small outdoor pool and communal kitchen make it more appealing than a basic place to sleep.

The compromises are straightforward: rooms are modest and sometimes dated, Economy rooms have no windows, and there's no elevator. Street-facing rooms can pick up traffic and nightlife noise, so request an interior room if sleep matters. We'd skip it if you need step-free access, contemporary finishes or a beachfront hotel.

• Best for: Budget-conscious couples and solo travelers; Exploring Old Town on foot; Travelers who appreciate a communal kitchen

• Watch out for: No elevator; Street noise in exposed rooms; Windowless Economy rooms

• Location: Central Zona Romántica, close to restaurants, nightlife and Los Muertos Beach; not beachfront.

• Rooms: Simple Mexican-style rooms with air conditioning; condition and noise exposure vary.

• Cleanliness: Consistently strong housekeeping feedback across Tripadvisor and Expedia.

• Service: Friendly, helpful staff are one of the most consistent reasons guests return.

• Amenities: Small outdoor pool, rooftop terrace, courtyard, free Wi-Fi and communal kitchen; breakfast and lunch available next door.

• Fees and surprises: Do not assume breakfast is included; Expedia says a cash incidental deposit may be required.
